WASHINGTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL 2015 SOCIAL STUDIES FAIR

MICHIGAN HISTORY DAY THEME: LEADERSHIP & LEGACY IN HISTORY**

**This year students will do research and create a project and report about a person or group of people whose actions in the past have had a lasting impact on Michigan, the U.S., or the World.  This is different than a biography report on a person’s life.  Students should focus on specific actions that this person took in their lifetime, and how those actions affect our lives today.

Washington Elementary School Social Studies Fair supports our social studies and language arts standards, and all fourth and fifth grade students are required to complete a Social Studies Fair project.  All students received one copy of the Michigan History Day Student Handbook, which outlines the types of projects that may be completed and provides general information for conducting research, organizing notes, developing a thesis, citing sources, and project judging / grading criteria.  All projects should address the 2015 Michigan History Day theme, “LEADERSHIP & LEGACY IN HISTORY,” however, the Annotated Bibliography and Process Paper described in the Handbook are optional, unless students wish to be judged for advancement to the District History Day competition.  If your child is planning to participate in the District History Day Competition, he or she should consult the following websites:  http://www.hsmichigan.org/mhd/ & http://www.nhd.org/AnnualTheme.htm for more details.  Mrs. Olsen is sponsoring a History Club for students wanting additional guidance and assistance in preparing for the District History Day Competition.
