I was completely obsessed with this album in 1997, but even then I would've allowed that I find half of it virtually unlistenable. In that respect, it reminds me of The Velvet Underground and Nico...there's so much going on all at once, it's impossible to absorb it all, I love half and hate half, and they're inventing about ten strands of music all at once.

I was immediately drawn in by the big beats, which reminded me of the Chemical Brothers, and the sheer disco-ness of it, which absolutely didn't remind me of the Chemical Brothers or anyone else at the time. The gatefold insert picture, complete with a Ronco compilation and an Iron Fist comic, added to the '70s magic of it all. At the same time, the '90s were full of '70s-worshipping, and this wasn't nearly as overt as, say, Len's "Steal My Sunshine" or Dazed And Confused. It was more a vibe than anything else, and I'd never heard a '90s artist manage to tap into that in quite the same way.

This also sounded utterly foreign to me at the time.  There aren't even any real 'songs' here to speak of...there's lots of beats and repetition and catchiness, but the lyrics are barely there, and when they are there, the French accent makes them alternately distracting and hilarious. But the beats were so crisp, the disco grooves so alluring, and the pop sensibilities were so prominent that I was enthralled...with about half the album.

I still don't know where these guys came from. To this day, the only "Teachers" they mention whom I've ever heard are Brian Wilson, Dr. Dre, and Joey Beltram. The rest of them, who knows? But while I'm completely ignorant about Daft Punk's influences, I sure as hell know who they influenced. Within a year, Cher's "Believe" and Madonna's Ray Of Light were at the top of the charts, and from there, they moved on to, oh, just about every single top 40 pop song on the radio in 2010.  Any time you hear autotune or disco-ish synths these days, you can place the credit (or, depending on your preferences, the blame) on this album.

With all that said, it's only a 4. "Rollin' And Scratchin'" makes me want to rip my ears off, with most of the second half of the album almost as offensive. At the same time, I forced myself through that second half 20 or 30 times back in the day, trying to will myself to like it after loving the poptastic first half. And while I could never get there, the abrasiveness did open me up to punk, heavier electronica, and Bowie's Berlin period in a way I never would've been open to prior to Homework.

Along with the above, there's some sentiment involved with my 4 stars. I turned 21 a few weeks before I heard this album. And all of a sudden, drinking was a lot easier to do. I spent more than a few evenings in my dorm room with this album and a couple of beers, trying to puzzle through it all. It was also the last album I fell in love with before I graduated from college, and the last album I remember getting to know while cruising around my boring hometown with buddies.  And while I've been (and will continue to be) obsessed with many, many albums since then, it hasn't been the same since entering the real world. Other stuff becomes more important, and I haven't had the time, energy or emotion to invest myself the same way as I used to at ages 12-22.

First of all - something you should be aware of if you have never heard "Daft Punk's" Amazing Debut Album:"Homework".........
..... This is a "House music" record....... You will find it in the electronic/house music section in record stores across the globe!
(also like most genres.... house music has lots of sub genres under it, so while it may not sound like the house music you and your friends drink watered down lager to on a saturday night in the hope of pulling some lonely fat desperate housewife who is so drunk you have to carry her home! - nevertheless it is house music(with a hint of techno thrown in))

Second of all - are you the type of person who goes onto a Gangsta Rap review page and complains that its too offensive? Would you Review classical music and complain that its not hardcore enough? If Yes then you really need putting out of your misery because you clearly have nothing better to do than complain..... Lets get things straight right now:  "Homework" is a house music album. House music is repetitive in nature..... its designed to be repetitive so you can dance to it ( house music is dance music is it not? ) So to come onto a review page of a house music album and to slam it by saying its repetitive and boring(When its certainly no more repetitive then the chicago house or detroit techno that influenced it), in my eyes is pure stupidity.

Right then........ on with the review!!!

The year is 1997 i've been dj'ing electronic music for a good few years now (i started out with the harder genres like most teens i know do because of the hi nrg let off some steam nature of it), but i was getting bored of my usual electronic fodder....the really good releases where getting to few and far between and i'd tried listening to house music like my friend was into( it was american soulful vocal type house) but i found it to cheesey i just couldnt take it seriously the transition of hard techno to vocal house just didnt sit well it, there's got to be some hard edged funky sounds out there for this techno fiend......... The following weekend i took a trip upto my sisters in Reading on the train with my mate, she had some errands to run so we just sat in the car and chilled and waited patiently i asked if she had any decent tunage and she reached around on the floor and pulled out:    TA DA ----"Homework" i remember thinking "daft punk"??, i bet its some indie garbage that one of my sisters friends has recomended to her, she said she had listened to it a few times and to see what i thought........  and so it began -Track one - Daftendirect "Tha funk back two at a time,c'mon" straight away i was interested because i couldnt figure out what genre it was??  then revolution 909 came on: my head couldnt stop nodding, its just so damn funky....... i was transfixed i never said a word for about 30 mins, i looked at my friend and he seemed to be feeling it to... eventually the car came to a halt and i didnt want to get i sister went back in the house to cook some food....and we stayed in the car listening to "homework" over and over shhmoking some shweet.

What stands out to me about homework is how funky the record is its crammed full of funky beats and nrg, but its weird it it seemed to have a calmness and energy about it at the same time, if you are going to listen to homework for the first time..  i recommend a good bassy stereo not a little wad box because it just wont do it justice, you need to feel the bass from this album - Dont expect the catchy jingles of   "Disco-very"  this is down n dirty housefunk.

Also - This album is a grower, it gets better with every listen, its not as instantly accessible as discovery, but if you ask me this is the better album!!

Of course, it did give me something to listen to when I was cruising with my friends back in high school.  There just doesn't seem to be too much heart or effort in this album though, and it wears thin pretty quickly...

...unless beats are your thing.
In my opinion, an album must actually be offensive to listen to, rather than merely lazy, uninspiring or downright boring, in order to merit being awarded a lowly 0.5 stars.  This, I thought, was so challenging that no album could actually be the proud recipient of the dreaded 0.5 star certificate.  However, I must applaud Daft Punk's innovation here, as they not only manage to fulfil my painful criteria to the letter, but they do so with panache, creating new ways to assault my eardrums that I thought had been previously banished to the banshees.  Be under no false impressions: if, after having been impressed by their sophomore, any wayward listener decides to mistakenly purchase this hoping for more of the same is going to be in for a rather shocking Discovery.

I was one such listener who foolishly decided to investigate Daft Punk's debut without doing my Homework.  Fact is, this is nothing like its followup; while Discovery intended to polish up commercial Dance, Daft Punk's debut album tries to reinvent the House genre, sadly replacing tedious, repetitive beats with... more tedious, repetitive beats.  Even when, by fortuitous coincidence, this manages to be anything other than hopelessly monotonous crap, the result is distinctly below par: both "Revolution 909" and "Around the World", while slightly better than the rest of the bunch, carry a tangible sense of disappointment.

The second half of the album, in particular, defies description through its sheer lack of merit.  Usually, some oasis of goodness happens, by serendipitous circumstance, to exist in the desolate wasteland, but Daft Punk have done an admirably good job at preventing anything other than utterly worthless shite from inhabiting the barren wilderness.  The purge is headed by the insidious couplet of "Rollin' and Scratchin'" and "Teachers", and though the following tracks ably assist in the resulting cleansing of all things tolerable, the vitriolic "Rollin' and Scratchin'" and the revolting "Teachers" ensure that your eardrums will have, already, been well and truly mangled beyond repair.

Homework lovers will, no doubt, be rallying outside my doorstep, flaming torches and pitchforks in hand, so it might be prudent to point out that I wouldn't call myself a supporter of House in any way, so, theoretically, I have no real benchmark of the genre to compare this to.  However, Homework is a revered bastion of the genre, so I would naturally assume that this is as good as House gets.  And, frankly, if this is as good as House gets, I have absolutely no desire whatsoever to investigate the underground element of the genre, when the sound will likely be even more acidic and the beats even more ear-laceratingly effective...
