Case Analysis: Case Studies: Goodyear2Case Analysis: Case Studies: GoodyearAs of the past 3 decades, women have shown a commendable progress in the workplace. For instance, the average weekly earnings for women was 62.1 % that of men in the year 1970. The raw pay difference decreased from 37.9 % to 21.5 % by the year 2007. Despite the progress, the raw wage difference has continually been used to further public policy agendas without offering an explanation behind the difference (An Analysis of Reasons for the Disparity in Wagesbetween Men and Women, 2009). This essay discusses a case of Ledbetter vs the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company where Lilly Ledbetter, the only female production supervisor at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company’s plant in Gadsent, had worked for over 20 years. She sued the company over gender discrimination in regards to her pay in 1998. Her salary was as much as 40 percent lower than that of the lowest-paid male supervisor (Brake and Grossman, 2007). Her lawsuit was rejected as untimely by The Supreme Court, who issued a 5-4 ruling because she filed her complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) too late (Bader, 2012). From an impartial view point, the company played foul in discriminating against Ledbetter on the basis of her gender. A socialism economic system serves as the setting for the business. The characteristics of the system are that the government owns the major means of production and this co-exists with the private ownership of the rest of the company. Additionally, the government provides general welfare for the people. Moreover, the government plays an active role in ensuring economic and social justice (Fieser, 2015). The law provides that employees should sue an employer within 180 days after their first discriminatory check, or at the time they find out even if they have been with the company for a while (Allison, 2008). The Equal Pay Act also states that an employer should pay men and women equally if they do the same kind of work, with defenses in pay discrepancies (Eeoc.gov, 2009).
